Insomnia is just insomnia, right? There’s no different types of insomnia, just different reactions, different bodies… well, you know, that’s not true – though the majority of people don’t realize it.

What are the main types, and where might you fall in?

Transient Insomnia

This form of insomnia affects more people than any other, and many people might not even consider it ‘insomnia’ – they don’t realize that it’s out of the ordinary and often go on with their lives.

Transient insomnia is when you lose only a few nights sleep. Maybe a big test is coming up, a possible promotion that you’re worried about, or bills that you don’t know how you’re going to pay.

This type of insomnia happens to most of us at one point or another, and, commonly, we get over it. We realize that, yes, we can’t sleep – we know why, and it’s okay in the end.

Acute Insomnia

Chronic insomnia is when you’re experiencing insomnia for long periods. Maybe a few nights a week, you can sleep alright – but you keep coming back to the sleepless nights, the issues with staying asleep… it just keeps happening.

It’s hard to shake this sort of insomnia, and many times, you’ll need some natural or medical intervention to get your sleep and your life back successfully.

Sleep Deprivation

No one likes to discover that they’re severely affected by sleep deprivation. Truth be told, most people get a little angry and irritated when they have a mild case of sleeplessness. Unfortunately, though, many people do indeed have to face the physical effects of sleep deprivation daily. What are the dangerous effects of sleep deprivation, you ask? Most Common Physical Effects of Insomnia and Sleep Deprivation…

Sheer Exhaustion

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill “it’s been a long day” tired. This is a complete and utter lethargy feeling, meaning you want to do absolutely nothing all day long, forever.

It does not matter how trivial the task may seem — walking across the room for the remote control, getting the mail, checking your e-mail, making a copy at work, having a quick snack, or even getting up to go to the bathroom — you don’t want to do it and feel drained even thinking about doing it. Finding a rock to crawl under would be great, but that would mean you’d have to crawl — which is another activity you don’t want to do.

Quick Note: This is the most common physical effect of sleep deprivation and sleeplessness there is — and it’s usually one of the first, if not THE FIRST, to hit. You’re well aware of how tired you typically get after a long day, so this type of SUPER TIRED should be pretty easy to spot.

Impaired Coordination. It’s one thing to have not-so-great hand-eye coordination or even a slower than standard reaction time, but this is a level of inadequacy you’ve never felt before. It’s as though you’ve been shot up full of pain killers and are now operating in slow motion. If you had to catch a ball to save your life, well, let’s say you’d be well missed.

Quick Note: A hazardous physical effect of sleep deprivation and insomnia. If your job requires a high attention level and split-second decision making, then you’re not going to be a highly regarded asset for very long. Even if you have a relatively easy and “lazy” job, you still have to drive to get there, right? How smoothly do you think you’re going to be able to drive with such impaired motor skills? Your chances of being in an accident have just increased 10-fold.

Blurred and/or “Off” Vision. You’re not going blind; you’re just having a bit of trouble focusing and seeing clearly. It’s not uncommon to experience a slight haziness from time to time when you are seriously sleep-deprived. However, if you experience this effect of insomnia & sleep deprivation in ADDITION to any other effects, you’ll be nearly incapable of doing anything without some form of help.

General Discomfort. You won’t be in pain or anything; you’ll feel wholly uncomfortable. And it doesn’t matter if you are in the worlds most comfortable pair of pyjamas lying on the worlds softest bed either. You are still going to feel unrelaxed and, for lack of a better word, “icky”.

More Health Problems. A severe lack of sleep can and WILL lead to future health problems. How so? Due to the weakening of your immune system over time. Your body needs rest to function correctly and stave off infections that attack your body daily. If you’re suffering from severe sleep deprivation and insomnia, well, it’s safe to say you’re not getting that vital rest. The weaker & weaker your immune system gets, the harder it will be for you to battle and defeat the viruses & bacteria which enter your system. Hence, you’re going to get very sick and develop numerous health problems as time goes on.

These are the most dangerous and VERY REAL physical effects of sleep deprivation. Although they won’t all spring up at the first sign of lack of sleep, you can pretty much bet that they will appear if the sleeplessness continues. Don’t let this happen! Take the necessary steps immediately to get the rest you need so you can avoid these life DESTROYING physical effects of sleep deprivation.
